What it is
PPE Speed-Run puts you in a simulated 3D hospital hallway, standing outside a new admission's door. The chart pops up with the vital signs, symptoms, and history. You anticipate the tests the provider will order, the results come back, and you make the NCLEX call: which isolation precautions does this patient need?
Then the clock starts. Open the three drawers of the isolation cart and grab what you need. The drawers are full of gloves in every size, surgical masks, three different N95 models, face shields, and things you do not need. You have to take your own glove size and the N95 you were fit tested on.
Then put it on your nurse in the right order: hand hygiene, gown, mask or respirator with a seal check, eye protection, then gloves over the gown cuffs. For airborne rooms, verify negative pressure before you walk in. Every patient ends with a scored breakdown and the why.
What you'll learn
- Standard, contact, droplet, airborne, droplet plus contact, and airborne plus contact precautions
- Which diseases go with each tier, including TB, measles, varicella, COVID-19, influenza, pertussis, meningitis, MRSA, C. difficile, scabies, and more
- The tests that confirm each diagnosis, like sputum AFB, lumbar puncture, stool toxin, and nasopharyngeal PCR
- The CDC order for putting on PPE, and why gloves always go last
- Why only your fit-tested N95 protects you, and why glove size matters
- Negative pressure rooms, seal checks, and soap and water for C. difficile
How it helps you
NCLEX tests clinical judgment, using NCSBN's Clinical Judgment Measurement Model. Every NURSYN game is built on the nursing process. PPE Speed-Run works these ADPIE steps: Assessment, Diagnosis, Implementation.
- Assessment: review the vital signs, symptoms, and history in the chart
- Diagnosis: anticipate the tests and identify the infection
- Implementation: gather and put on the right PPE, in the right order, under time pressure
- Safety and infection control is a core NCLEX client needs category
How to play
- Review the chart: vital signs, symptoms, and history
- Answer the NCLEX-style questions about which tests to expect
- Choose the isolation precautions. The sign goes on the door
- Raid the 3 drawers of the isolation cart before the clock runs out
- Drag your PPE onto your nurse in the right order, then enter the room
