Word Parts: Medical Terminology
Learn the parts in short slide decks, then snap them together and watch the meaning appear.
Don't memorize 10,000 words. Learn about 180 parts and you can decode most of them.
Why word parts work: breaking a word into its meaningful parts (morphological analysis) helps learners figure out and remember unfamiliar words. Research reviews have found that teaching word parts improves vocabulary and reading:
Bowers, Kirby, and Deacon (2010), Review of Educational Research, 80(2), 144 to 179, doi:10.3102/0034654309359353; and Goodwin and Ahn (2013), Scientific Studies of Reading, 17(4), 257 to 285, doi:10.1080/10888438.2012.689791. Most of these studies were done with school-age readers; medical terminology is built the same way, which is why it is taught by parts.
